Abstract
There is still a need for more information to clarify the changes that occur in uterine and ovarian blood flow during the menstrual cycles. Recently, the introduction of transvaginal color and pulsed wave doppler system has allowed the
possibility
of
studying uterine and ovarian blood flow velocity. The purpose of this study was to examine blood flow velocity waveforms of the uterine and ovarian arteries during the normal menstrual cycle using transvaginal color and pulsed wave doppler
ultrasonography. We studied 25 healthy women with a regular menstrual cycle and no history of previous ovarian surgery and medication. Blood flow impedance as reflected by the pulsatility index(PI) was determined for both arteries on 200
occasions.
There was no significant difference in the PI values between the right and left arteries. In the uterine arteries, the mean PI values during the menstrual cycle was significnt difference. In the ovarian arteries, the mean PI values during the
menstrual
cycle was significant difference (P<0.05). This study suggests that doppler velocity of the uterine and ovarian arteries during the menstrual cycle may help us to better understand the uterine and ovarian response to endocrine changes.
